LACONIA — First it was the former Gulf of Mexico. Now, Americans will be able to rejoice in the renaming of another well-known body of water to better reflect American heritage, the one previously known as Lake Winnipesaukee.
The presidential commission created by President Donald Trump’s executive order on Jan. 20, which made a splash by christening the body of water between Texas and Florida as Gulf of America, is now taking aim at New Hampshire’s largest body of water and the driver behind much of the state’s tourism industry.
“The naming of our national treasures, including breathtaking natural wonders and historic works of art, should honor the contributions of visionary and patriotic Americans in our nation’s rich past,” Trump wrote in the order that created the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. That board, created days after the order was issued, is charged with fielding requests to change names of geographic locations and, wherever possible, replace old or incomprehensible names — or names that just don’t sound cool — with new names that pay homage to those "visionary and patriotic Americans.”
In keeping with the order, the formerly known Mount Denali has now had its traditional name, Mount McKinley, restored. Similarly, the board has found a solution for the problematic name Winnipesaukee, by renaming the body of water Cyberlake.
Trump was in Wolfeboro on March 31, for the announcement, which was underscored by the arrival of a fleet of Cybertrucks, which a local marina would be offering as rentals. Trump said that the trucks, which most recently made headlines as being the most-recalled vehicles currently offered for sale, are actually amphibious.
No need for a boat, just steer your Cybertruck straight into the lake.
Their ability to operate just as well in the lake as they do on public roads emphasized just how “beautiful” the vehicles are, at least in Trump’s view.
“As soon as I saw it, I said, ‘That is the coolest design,’” Trump said, adding he planned to buy one himself.
“The one I like is that one, and I want the same color,” Trump said, pointing to the seventh in a line of Cybertrucks, which all were shipped with the same unpainted stainless steel body panels.
Teslas can be leased for as low as $299 per month, Trump noted, and all “have self-driving” capabilities, which will surely come in handy for Cybertruck drivers unfamiliar with the terrain on the bottom of Lake Winnipe — err ... Cyberlake.
Chair of the Board of Geographic Names, Sloof Lirpa, suggested that many of the alphabet-soup names given to New Hampshire locations could be improved. The Winnipesaukee River should naturally be known as Cyberstream, while Mount Chocorua, Lake Winnisquam and the Kancamagus Highway — all of which are “impossible to pronounce,” Lipa said — should be next on the list.
Two locations in New Hampshire that Trump finds already acceptable are the White Mountains, and the area of Cyberlake known as The Broads.
