TILTON — Sean Valovanie has worked his way up through the ranks of Tilton-Northfield Fire & EMS over the past two decades. His hard work paid off this week when he was officially sworn in as the new chief.

“I’m excited to lead the fire department to its next chapter,” said Valovanie, who had been the interim chief since Nov. 5. “I am surrounded by an excellent staff. The crew here is unbelievable, and I look forward to work with them to serve the towns of Tilton and Northfield.”

Valovanie was sworn in during the Dec. 1 meeting of the Tilton-Northfield Fire Commission. In a statement signed by Commissioners Timothy Sattler, Paul Auger and Jason Wright, Valovanie was described as “a dedicated member of the department.”

Prior to joining Tilton-Northfield Fire, Valovanie was a call firefighter for the Town of Gilford. The commissioners are impressed by his leadership qualities, as well as what they described as a “service-focused mindset” through his time in the U.S. Navy.

Valovanie started as a firefighter at Tilton-Northfield, then moved his way up the ladder, serving as the lieutenant and captain, before becoming the interim chief last month.

The commissioners said they are looking forward to working with Valovanie, who they see advancing the department’s “operational excellence.” They also see him strengthening partnerships between the department and the community, while providing the highest possible level of service.

“This will be a big change,” Valovanie said. “I’ve been preparing for a few years now for this, and I’m excited to explore these new responsibilities.”

The commissioners said Valovanie is known for his professionalism, commitment to training, and strongly supporting his colleagues and the community.

“His experience, leadership, and deep understanding of the district make him exceptionally well-suited to guide the department into its next chapter,” the commissioners wrote.

Deputy Call Chief Michael Robinson will remain in that position, Valovanie said, noting Robinson's 45 years of experience in the department cannot be understated. He commended Robinson for his work with Tilton-Northfield Fire & EMS, saying he has been vital in the transition of Valovanie becoming chief.

“His support has been unwavering and I couldn’t have done it without him,” Valovanie said.

The deputy fire chief position has been vacant since Valovanie took over in the interim. He said the plan is to hire a new deputy chief from within, and an announcement is expected in the next few weeks, before a swearing in at a future commission meeting.

“He is a very good candidate,” Valovanie said of Robinson.
