So close! A Wheel of Fortune contestant had a come-from-behind win during the game, but couldn’t solve the Bonus Round puzzle to take home $55,000. And he let out a huge groan of frustration after missing out on the big money.
Dottie Edwards, from Tampa, Florida, solved the first toss-up on May 20. She loves the card game Bid Whist and loves talking trash while doing it.
Edwards played against Sheila Faura, from Glenolden, Pennsylvania, and Jason Ertischek, from Centereach, New York. Ertischek, a New York City train conductor, solved the second toss-up.
During the first round, Ertischek obtained the Carnival Cruise Wedge, but immediately landed on Bankrupt after, and had to give it up. Edwards got the Wild Card and then landed on Bankrupt. The turn moved back to Ertischek, who solved “I Saw The Sign, and It Opened Up My Eyes.” He put $4,100 in his bank.
Edwards solved most of the letters. Then, Faura, powerlifting champion, guessed a few letters before picking a wrong one. Ertischek had only two letters left to solve when he landed on Bankrupt. Edwards solved “Spare Key To My Heart,” giving her $2,350.
Faura finally got on the board when she solved “Water Aerobics.” She won a trip on a Bahamas cruise. This gave her the lead with $9,295.
All three game show contestants solved one triple toss-up each, putting $2,000 more in their banks. Ertischek wound up in the Bonus Round when he solved “Last But Not Least,” putting $9,000 more in his bank, giving him a total of $15,100.
Faura had $11,295. Edwards went home with $4,350.
Ertischek chose “What Are You Doing?” for his Bonus Round category. He brought his wife, Katie, and her dad with him.
Wheel of Fortune started him off with “R,S,T,L,N, and E.” Ertischek rounded out the puzzle with “G,C,D, and A.”
The puzzle then looked like “_ _G_R_NG _ _T _ _ _ _ _C_.” As the clock counted down, the contestant guessed “Wagering….”
The puzzle was “Figuring Out How Much.” There was $40,000 in the envelope, which would have given him $55,100. No wonder he groaned in frustration after missing out.
“I can’t decide if I like the category ‘What are you doing?’ Sometimes it’s easy, but today I thought it was the most random thing you’re doing. I think he still should have gotten Figuring, though,” a Reddit user said.
