Currently, Zach Galifianakis, Dolly Wells, and Spencer House are set to star in the series, according to FX’s official report, but previous teases made by Variety hinted at the inclusion of Cary Elwes, Kumail Nanjiani, and Nikki Crawford as part of the ensemble as well. Official details on the characters are still forthcoming.
What is Very Young Frankenstein about?
Very Young Frankenstein doesn’t currently have a logline, but FX’s President of Entertainment, Nick Grad, teases that the show “blends inspiration from the fan-favorite movie with inventive, irreverent spirit that has defined FX comedies over the years, making this a completely original take on the classic story. In the hands of FX veterans Stefani, Taika, and Garrett [Basch], alongside the iconic Mel Brooks, we know that fans will have as much fun watching this series as we’re having making it.”
When TV Insider caught up with Cary Elwes before the pickup announcement, he shared, “Mel’s producing it. He’s working more than I am right now. The guy’s unbelievably busy. I’m so proud of him. It was fun. It was directed by the great Taika Waititi, and we had a lot of fun, obviously, making it. I’m looking forward to it.”
As for reuniting with Mel Brooks, Elwes said, “[Mel] is like a surrogate dad to me, really. We talk all the time. I didn’t push him on this. He came to me with it, which was nice. It’s always nice to get a call from him that’s about work, as opposed to just ‘hi.’ So that was fun. Can’t wait for you to see it.”
For those who aren’t familiar with the original 1974 film, serving as the inspiration behind the show, Young Frankenstein follows Frederick Frankenstein (Gene Wilder), a scientist who inherits his grandfather Victor’s Transylvania castle. Out of scientific curiosity and an effort to prove his grandfather wasn’t completely mad, Frederick attempts to recreate his grandfather’s experiments with his own monster with the help of Igor, the grandson of Victor’s former assistant.
The movie featured Wilder, Peter Boyle as the monster, Marty Feldman as Igor, Cloris Leachman as Frau Blücher, Madeline Kahn as Elizabeth, and Teri Garr as Inga, among others, including Brooks.
Who is making Very Young Frankenstein?
Very Young Frankenstein is executive produced by Stefani Robinson, Taika Waititi, Mel Brooks, Garrett Basch, Michael Gruskoff, and Kevin Salter. The pilot was written by Robinson and directed by Waititi. The show is produced by 20th Television.
