As Netflix continues to stack the deck for its upcoming Las Vegas-set drama The Roman, the streaming giant has added even more star power to the table. Oscar Isaac will star in the top-tier offering as Betty Gilpin, Alec Baldwin, and David Costabile join the cast of the high-stakes series, expanding what is quickly becoming one of the platform’s most intriguing ensemble dramas in development.

The Roman is from creators, showrunners, and executive producers Brian Koppelman and David Levien, best known for their shows Death by Lightning and GLOW. The series will be executive produced by filmmaker Martin Scorsese, who previously brought the violent underbelly of Las Vegas to life in the acclaimed 1995 crime epic Casino.

Set against the glittering excess, backroom deals, and ruthless power struggles of Las Vegas, The Roman centers on Isaac’s Bobby Red, a man navigating a world where fortunes can be made (or destroyed) overnight.

What is The Roman about?

The logline from Netflix describes the project as: “The hour-long drama is set in the high-stakes, sharp-elbowed present-day Las Vegas casino business, which is a modernized but still dangerous version of the legendary city. At the center of it all stands Robert ‘Bobby Red’ Redman, president of the hottest hotel casino in town, who has to make some long odds moves to try and secure his position and take more ground.”

Who stars in The Roman?

Oscar Issac will headline the effort as Bobby Red, a casino president who is at the heart of The Roman.

Bobby is married to Gilpin’s Marla Blake, the formidable wife of Bobby Red. She is a brilliant, highly connected lawyer who knows how to play the town just as well as her husband.

Baldwin will play Paul “Primo” Clark, the longtime chairman of the organization and a surrogate father figure to Bobby, who isn’t afraid to let his protégés fight for his favor.”

And Costabile will step into the role of Bill Saverick, the operator of a rival casino and a longtime associate of Bobby’s, who finds himself in a precarious position from time to time.

Who is behind The Roman?

Koppelman and Levien serve as creators, showrunners, and executive producers. Other executive producers include Scorsese and Sikelia Productions, Julie Yorn and Rick Yorn for Expanded Media, Paul Schiff, Beth Schacter, Isaac, J.C. Chandor, and co-executive producer Kerry Orent.

Chandor, who previously directed Isaac in Triple Frontier and A Most Violent Year, will direct the first two episodes of The Roman.
