SANDWICH — Nelson Monroe Russell, 71, of Oak Ridge Road, died July 29, 2010 at Golden View Health Care Center, Meredith.

Born in Henniker on November 18, 1938, he was the son of Ernest Perkins and Maria Christina [Stjernsten] Russell.

He grew up in Henniker and graduated from Cogswell Memorial High School, class of 1956. He resided in Weare for many years before moving to Moultonborough in the late 1970’s. He has been a resident of Sandwich since 2001.

Nelson went to work as a warden for the NH Fish and Game, in 1961. From 1962 to 1964, he was a Concord Police officer. In 1964, he joined the NH State Troopers. Nelson was a NH State Trooper for twenty years and had graduated from the Command Training Institute and also the FBI Academy in 1980. He served as a Lieutenant and the Commander of Troop E from 1977 until his retirement in 1984. He then became a real estate agent and worked for many years with Coldwell Bankers Real Estate Office, in the Lakes Region Area.

He served as the NH Fish and Game Commissioner for Carroll County, from 2001 to 2007. He was a Hunters Safety Education Instructor for twenty-five years, teaching in the Moultonborough area. Nelson was also a past member of the Meredith Kiwanis Club, Meredith.

Nelson was a US Air Force veteran.

He was predeceased by his sister, Dagmar Brickley, of Peterborough, NH, who died in 1997.

He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to fish, hunt, and garden.

Nelson is served by his wife Alice G. [Kulbacki] Russell of Sandwich, three daughters, Judith Russell of Lyme, NH, Tracy Tardiff Michaud, of Montgomery, TX, Lenay Tardiff Richardson, of Hudson, NH, eight grandchildren, sister, Elvina M. Myers of Conchecton, NY, nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held in the Mayhew Funeral Home, Routes #3 and #104, Meredith, on Wednesday 6pm to 8pm. A graveside service will be held in the Rural Cemetery, Center Sandwich, on Thursday at 11am. The Rev. Paul O’Neil, pastor of the Moultonborough United Methodist Church, will officiate.
