NORTHFIELD — Spaulding Youth Center was honored with a grant of $5,000 through the Franklin Savings Bank Fund for Community Advancement. The grant will support Healing with Horses, an equine therapy program provided through Lakes Region Riding Academy.

Susan C. Ryan, president and chief executive officer of Spaulding Youth Center, proudly accepted the grant on the center's behalf at the annual FSB Fund for Community Advancement Celebration. The organization was also the surprise recipient of Franklin Savings Bank’s annual Richard W. DuBois Community Impact Award, presented annually to honor an organization which has made a significant impact in Franklin or surrounding communities.

“Spaulding is a wonderful local organization that has served children and families in need for nearly 150 years. Their dedication to providing quality services to children and youth in need is one of the many reasons this organization deserves this grant as well as the Richard W. DuBois Community Impact Award,” said Ronald L. Magoon, president and chief executive officer of Franklin Savings Bank, and member of the Spaulding board of directors since 2013.

Healing with Horses provides residential students the opportunity to experience horseback riding at Lakes Region Riding Academy in Gilford. Students receive personal lessons from founder Julie Lawrence once a week for a four-week session. Horseback riding and horsemanship serve as an effective form of therapy for youth facing behavioral, emotional and physical challenges. Children create an emotional bond with the horses, and participation encourages them to build social skills and confidence in a positive atmosphere.

“We are incredibly honored to also receive the Richard W. DuBois Community Impact Award as a testament to the positive impact our organization has on the children and families we serve," said Ryan.
