SANDWICH — Exploring the history of Washington D.C., its purpose, location, and evolution over time, Sandwich Central School students travelled to the city as part of a comprehensive unit of study. For nearly 20 years, sixth-grade students have brought their classroom lessons and knowledge to life during immersive experiences in our nation's capital.
Starting in January, students read, write and learn about a variety of topics connected to this trip, from the three branches of government, historical figures and events, to budgeting, mapping and famous artwork and artists. The trip includes a wide array of tours from the Portrait Gallery, Lincoln Memorial, World War II Memorial, Washington Monument, Martin Luther King Memorial, Einstein Memorial, Capitol Building, Hirshhorn Museum, National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of the American Indian, National Zoo, Planet Word Museum, and Ford's Theatre.
There were many highlights for students including viewing the Washington Monument at night, exploring the Planet Word Museum where they engaged with new languages, experiencing a show at Ford’s Theatre and observing the animals at the National Zoo. From January to March students learn a breadth of knowledge as this comprehensive unit is thoughtfully woven into their educational experience before, during, and after their travels to Washington, D.C.
“This trip serves as a culminating event to celebrate our learning journey and we are proud of how the students positively represent SCS as a cohesive group of learners, supporting one another as they navigate the nation’s capital, reflect on their experiences, and enjoy the trip,” sixth grade teacher Rebekah Gulla said.
