2 injured in Belmont home explosion Thursday

BELMONT — Two people were injured in a home explosion Thursday night, one with serious burn injuries, and the cause of the combustion is under investigation by the state Fire Marshal’s Office.

Belmont Fire Department responded to a call on Sunset Drive at 5:07 p.m. on Aug. 6, for a reported explosion and “large column of black smoke coming from the area,” according to a press release from the fire department.

A Belmont firefighter was first on scene, quickly calling for additional crews due to the size of the structure fire and to help the resident, who was badly burned. The adult occupant had been found on the floor, and removed from the burning home by a “courageous” neighbor, whose house and carport were also damaged in the explosion. The anonymous good Samaritan rushed into the home, receiving burns themself to the right arm.

“The Belmont Fire Department recognizes this individual’s extraordinary bravery and selfless actions under extremely dangerous conditions,” reads the release.

The homeowner, whose condition remains unknown, was taken by ambulance to Concord Hospital, and eventually moved to Boston, after transportation by air was denied due to weather conditions. They’re receiving care at Mass General Hospital.

Initially, two handlines from a Laconia firetruck were used to temper the flames given the radiant heat, preserve the neighboring home, and prevent a 250-gallon propane tank from combusting. Belmont and Tilton-Northfield firefighters helped with fire suppression efforts upon arriving next, and the latter helped deploy a drafting operation at a boat ramp on Lake Winnisquam to help supply much-needed water.

Also responding to the request for mutual aid were Barnstead, Franklin, Gilford, Gilmanton, Loudon and Sanbornton. A Chichester ambulance provided emergency medical support, and Alton provided station coverage for Belmont. Eversource also responded.

The fire was under control at 6:38 p.m. Thursday, and Belmont firefighters stayed on the scene for overhaul operations, including watching for hotspots and ensuring the scene was safe.

“The Town of Belmont extends its sincere appreciation to all our mutual aid partners whose rapid response and teamwork were instrumental in bringing this challenging incident under control,” states the release.

The Fire Marshal’s Office said they are providing investigative assistance to Belmont.
