PLYMOUTH — Educational Theatre Collaborative, in partnership with Plymouth State University and the Plymouth community, presents "The Spongebob Musical," Jan. 22–25 at The Flying Monkey.
Founded over 30 years ago by Trish Lindberg, ETC has long been a model for meaningful educational theater. When Lindberg retired last year, she passed the ETC legacy and directing reins to Fran Page and Jule Finley.
Page, a PSU graduate in 2005, is now a professor in the PSU’s Musical Theatre Department. Finley earned her graduate degrees from PSU, and began work with ETC during that time. Together, they continue commitment to creating high-quality theatrical experiences that blend professional standards with learning opportunities, while strengthening the connection between the university and the community.
This year’s "The Spongebob Musical" is a collaborative effort, with support from the college and and the Common Man. The production features PSU talent, including 11 students and three alumni.
The creative team also highlights emerging PSU artists. The choreographer is Addison Granger, a 2022 graduate who studied dance at PSU in 2022. Behind the scenes, PSU students Max Shanteler and Ethan Clark serve as stage manager and lighting designer respectively, gaining invaluable hands-on experience. Music direction is led by Plymouth resident Christine Chiasson.
The process is intensive. The entire production — from first rehearsal to opening night — is created in just three weeks. Cast members of all ages come together, with a wide range of abilities represented. The ensemble learns from one another, works collaboratively, and forms a unified team committed to telling the story.
While its title may suggest a children’s show, beneath the colorful world and humor of "The Spongebob Musical" is a story about optimism in the face of adversity and the strength of community. Featuring music by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, John Legend, Cyndi Lauper, David Bowie, Panic! At the Disco, Lady A, The Flaming Lips, and more, the score is appealing to audiences of all ages.
