BRIDGEWATER — Join the Newfound Lake Region Association at the Newfound Lake Inn for Newfound Science Pub, an engaging opportunity to connect with experts in science and conservation over food and drinks. This popular event will be held on Wednesday, April 15 at 5 p.m.Â
This month’s Science Pub takes a close-up look at the small but mighty movers and shakers of lakes: plankton.
Plankton are microscopic organisms that form the foundation of lake food webs and play a critical role in water quality and ecosystem health. By studying them, scientists gain valuable insight into how lakes are changing over time. That research is especially important today following the detection of spiny water flea, an invasive zooplankton, in several New Hampshire lakes. Though tiny, this species can disrupt food webs, alter plankton communities, and trigger ripple effects throughout the ecosystem.
UNH Professor of Limnology Dr. Amanda McQuaid will explore how plankton are monitored in New Hampshire lakes, what they reveal about lake health, and what scientists are learning from lakes impacted by spiny water flea. Participants are invited to discuss current issues, ask questions, and share their perspectives in a casual, social setting.
This event is free. Attendees are encouraged to arrive at 5 p.m. to purchase food and drinks, with the discussion beginning at 6. Registration is required. Visit NewfoundLake.org/events or call 603-744-8689 to register.
