MOULTONBOROUGH — The Moultonborough School District has appointed Michael Whaland the next superintendent of schools.
Whaland currently serves as superintendent of SAU 13, overseeing the school districts of Tamworth, Madison, and Freedom. He brings more than 14 years of educational leadership experience within the state, including building-level leadership and district administration roles.
In recognition of his exemplary leadership, Whaland was recently named the 2026 New Hampshire Superintendent of the Year by the New Hampshire School Administrators Association — one of the state’s highest honors for educational leaders. He was recognized for his student-centered approach, collaborative leadership style, and strategic initiatives that have positively impacted students, staff, and communities across SAU 13.
During his tenure in SAU 13, Whaland launched innovative programs to support students and families, including efforts to address food insecurity, establish universal preschool services, enhance foundational reading programs, expand professional development for educators, and engage communities through expanded access to school facilities and collaborative planning efforts.
Whaland holds four degrees from Plymouth State University, including a doctor of education, and also serves as a lecturer at both Plymouth State and New England College.
His leadership philosophy is grounded in elevating academic excellence, fostering inclusive school climates, and building strong partnerships among teachers, families, and community stakeholders. As superintendent of SAU 45, he will work collaboratively with the school board, educators, and community members to continue advancing the district’s mission of ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive academically, socially, and personally.
The Moultonborough School Board would like to express its sincere gratitude to the members of the Superintendent Search Committee and the New Hampshire School Boards Association for their dedication and efforts over the past few months. The input of the many community members who shared their insights and voices throughout this search is also very valued.Â
