MEREDITH — There’s a new kind of friend roaming the halls of Inter-Lakes Elementary School — Rosie the comfort dog is here to lend a paw. In February, after a year of training, Rosie will be ready to go to school full-time alongside School Resource Officer Rob Nedeau.
The goal is for Rosie to ease stress, support emotional regulation and to provide a calming space for students. Rosie is also a loyal audience for young readers, offering encouragement with every page turned.
In addition to providing comfort at Inter-Lakes, Nedeau hopes to bring Rosie to other areas of need, whether it’s a neighboring school experiencing a critical incident or a student needing support at the Child Advocacy Center or in court.
Rosie will be well-trained and able to provide support in a variety of tense situations, but note she is not a police patrol dog and thus not trained for any type of criminal work.
Rosie was adopted by Nedeau through a non-profit and fully volunteer organization called “Hero Pups” out of Exeter.
