NEW HAMPTON ― Fifth grade student Cedar Newman, son of Brett Newman and Elizabeth O'Toole, was crowned top speller of the New Hampton Community School Spelling Bee on Thursday, Jan. 22. Third-grader Genevieve Brown, placed second. The school spelling bee was a spell-off between the top two finishers from each classroom competition for first through fifth grade.
Newman will compete in an online semifinal bee before the final, state spelling bee. This online spelling bee will be for all New Hampshire school winners. Twenty to 25 of the top scorers will advance to the NH Union Leader's NH State Spelling Bee Finals at the end of March at Memorial High School in Manchester.
The spelling bee was held at NHCS and was judged by Ariel Maloney, Christine Hunewell, and Cath Smith. The event was sponsored by the NHCS Parent Teacher Organization and organized and facilitated by NHCS faculty.
