MEREDITH — As the Meredith Historical Society reopens Saturday, Aug. 15, it welcomes a new collaboration with the New Hampshire Boat Museum in Wolfeboro.

Several models from their collection, most significantly the side wheeler MS Mount Washington, are now on display in the Main Street window of the Historical Society. First launched on Lake Winnipesaukee in 1872 as a complement to the B & M Railroad system, it and the “new” Mount continue as emblems of the Lakes Region. A look through the window provides a visual history of familiar boats like canoes, speedboats, sailboats, and the “Old Mount.”

The second window is a pictorial history of children’s summer camps. Items on loan from former campers convey the nostalgia of water and woodland days.

Before wake boarding and tubing, waterskiing was the epitome of summer sport and the Lakes Region was a national hot spot. Resident Don Phillips loaned photographs and memorabilia of the water-ski school he ran through the 1960s, in view inside the building.

During the reopening on Saturday, Aug. 15, visitors are invited to stop by, with face masks, to the 4th Meredith Mercantile Market on the sidewalk, where additional artisan designs have been added.
