CONCORD — State Sen. Mark McConkey (R-Freedom) was elected Aug. 21, as chairman of the Cyanobacteria Mitigation Loan and Grant Trust Fund Task Force. The panel of lawmakers, state officials, and members of the public chose McConkey to lead it at its first meeting at the Statehouse in Concord.

“Cyanobacteria is a threat to every lake and river in New Hampshire, and we are going to fight it with every tool we can find,” McConkey said. “We’ve made a bipartisan commitment to clean up these hazardous blooms when they occur and to take steps to prevent them in the first place.”

The Task Force will explore funding options for loans and grants to treat and prevent cyanobacteria blooms, including voluntary boat and motor vehicle decals and using a portion of existing septic design application fees and transportation funds. Recommendations for legislation to implement a sustainable funding source are due by Jan. 1, 2027.

At McConkey’s request, Senate President Sharon Carson has agreed to livestream all future Task Force meetings at youtube.com/@NewHampshireSenate.

McConkey was the prime sponsor of SB 598, which created the Cyanobacteria Task Force.
