There is a trend in political campaigns that seems more common lately, perhaps as a reflection of the current adversarial tone of politics. So many campaign ads have the same tone: “I am going to fight for (fill in the blank).” Sometimes the candidate cites causes that they either have fought for or intend to fight for; sometimes they simply claim to be “a fighter” without providing any specifics.
It would be refreshing to hear words from a candidate to the effect of “I will engage with my colleagues in respectful dialogue to understand their positions and identify areas of mutual interest on which we can build consensus, so we can do our job of serving the needs of the people who have elected us, focusing on issues over ideology.”
It is a radical idea in these times when extreme and inflexible positions are the order of the day and compromise is a bad word. But he or she would have my vote.
