To The Daily Sun,

The Home Possible Project is a local nonprofit with a mission to create supportive housing for adults with developmental disabilities in the Lakes Region. Our board consists of local parent-caregivers, who are acutely aware of the critical lack of affordable, appropriate housing/care for adults with DD in New Hampshire.

We’re asking Gilford voters to support Article 27 on the town ballot.

Article 27 would authorize the selectboard to convey a parcel of town-owned land on Alvah Wilson Road to The Home Possible Project, exclusively to create supportive housing for adults with developmental disabilities. Our building plan is designed to house 10 adults in separate studio/one-bedroom apartments with supports.

We thank the selectboard for their unanimous support, and the many residents who have offered positive feedback. The project places no additional financial burden on Gilford residents. Construction will be funded through federal, state, and private sector grants and donations, with continuing operating costs covered by affordable monthly rent and service budgets paid by federal/state funding via residents’ NH Bureau of Developmental Services budgets.

Legislation pending in the NH Statehouse would establish a committee to study the impact of the housing crisis on people with disabilities. Approximately 70% of adults with developmental disabilities live at home with family caregivers. 60% of these caregivers are aged 55-74. There’s a critical shortage of supportive housing to meet their needs, leaving many at risk of homelessness. There must be a collaborative effort by communities, nonprofits, and government to solve this crisis. The Home Possible Project stands ready.

Please vote "yes" on Article 27.
