To The Daily Sun,
I am honored to serve Gilmanton, Gilford, and Ward 2 of Laconia as state representative. Two years ago, I submitted an ambitious agenda which is outlined on my website, drnagelfornh.com. I am honored to say I addressed all these issues by promoting sensibility in government.
Sensibility does not mean abandoning conservative values. It means taking on leadership to bring all stakeholders together, to talk to each other, not at each other, to work consensually to address complex social problems in a manner that helps all of us. My ability to do this was reflected in my being appointed chair of one committee and two sub-committees and serve as the vice chair of the opioid abatement committee. This level of leadership is unusual for a first term legislator.
As the only Republican physician in the legislature, my primary focus has been to correct the unintended consequences of 30 years of health care reform which have not only failed to control cost, increase access, and improve efficiency, it has actually worsened them. Fifty percent of Americans are under-insured. That is an access crisis.
I authored and passed legislation that increases access to integrative and alternative care and promotes prior authorization and electronic medical record reform. These measures, some first in the nation, have drawn national attention will promote improved care.
I will always uphold the sanctity of the doctor-patient relationship and the social determinants of health, and I will oppose any legislation which interferes with them. I have rightfully challenged my party on the consequences of proposed legislation which adversely affects these issues. Still, I voted with the party 87% last year.
We have accomplished a lot. There is a lot more to do and I ask for support on Sept. 10, to help me do this.
Rep. David Nagel
