To The Daily Sun,

Currently our precious democracy is in trouble, largely due to electing a president who lacks character. I write to remind our readers what a man or woman of character possesses.

First, a person of character consistently demonstrates and acts on strong moral and ethical principles. He or she lives and exhibits values of integrity, honesty and truthfulness.

He or she is responsible and takes ownership for their actions, choices and consequences.

A person of character treats others with respect and dignity, regardless of their background, race, beliefs or status. Furthermore, he listens to, and values different perspectives and seeks to learn a better way for the future.

A person of character demonstrates empathy, compassion and shows kindness and concern for others.

He or she exhibits courage and advocates for what is right, whether it’s defending the vulnerable, speaking the truth, or admitting their own mistakes.

Decent people with moral values and ethical qualities are folks readers can admire and emulate, rely on and trust. We all must vote for candidates who exhibit uprightness, honesty and probity, whether running for office at the city or town, county, state or national level.

As a town manager (now retired), I worked daily for decades with and for elected selectmen, selectwomen and city councilors. I pray that we return to a country with politicians who possess character first and foremost. God bless America.
