LACONIA — Two car accidents Monday evening on Union Avenue kept first responders busy, even before the winter weather hit.

Firefighters were called to 957 Union Ave. at 3:28 p.m. on Jan. 5, where a truck was upside down in the road.

“There was a male patient with minor injuries,” said Fire Chief Tim Joubert in a phone interview. “The vehicle was leaking fluid.”

The driver — the lone occupant of the vehicle — was transported to Concord Hospital-Laconia for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

According to a post in the Facebook group "Laconia is Really Talking," the driver of the truck was Laconia resident Michael Weeks, who wrote:

“It was me, that was hit. It’s my truck on it’s roof. An elderly gentleman was leaving the carwash. He didn’t see me, and hit the bed of my truck. I was doing 30mph. I just left work. Not every incident in this city is suspect. It was an accident! For the people that have been inconvenienced, my sincerest apologies. I wish I had been 10 feet further.”

Weeks, reached on Facebook Messenger, said the entire situation was an accident.

“From my perspective, it was just an accident. I was driving home from work, and all of a sudden, I was on my roof. I crawled out of the truck, tried to stand and felt sharp pain in my left rib cage. I fractured some ribs, but I'm glad it wasn't a lot worse. For myself, as well as the other gentleman. I spoke with him briefly before the ambulance got there, and he said he was okay. Which I was happy to hear. He appeared to be an older gentleman. I'm not sure if he saw me round the bend through a snowbank and signage in the area, but, these things happen.”

It was Weeks' hope his comment helped stop speculation, he said, and urged drivers to use a bit more caution.

“Maybe others can use the incident as a reminder to take their time, this time of year. It's hard for all of us to drive in inclement weather and road conditions, and snowbanks are everywhere and obstruct our normal lines of sight,” Weeks said.

Shortly after at 6:10 p.m., first responders received another car accident call at 1160 Union, for a T-bone-style accident.

“Occupants were able to get out of vehicles, and there were two vehicles involved,” Joubert said. “There was no transport.”

Snow falling Monday night didn’t seem to be a factor in either of the accidents. As of 12:27 p.m. on Tuesday, the National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for the area, with snow and mixed precipitation expected starting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, through 10 a.m. Wednesday.
