Norm Paquette: City has more to worry about than flag, banner policy

In the current times we are in, with real needs within the City of Laconia, a flag and banner policy apparently is of utmost importance reaching a spot on the front page of The Laconia Daily Sun recently — seriously?

Regarding taxpayer property, no special interest groups or one’s personal choices and beliefs should be allowed to be displayed in the form of a flag or banner on any city property. I think we would be headed down a precarious road if we allowed any flags or banners other than government flags or banners to be flown over or displayed on public property.

I can appreciate and feel that one can believe what they want and support what they want, fortunately those are the freedoms we have, let's keep it that way. Express yourself on your own private property. Why is it so difficult? Public property is not the place for it.

Why do we as a society have to keep pushing it and pushing it, never happy for what we already have?

Thankfully Laconia is already a diverse and accepting community. Other than government flags and banners on taxpayers’ property, the potential to cause discord will exist. Enough is enough, let's move on and use common sense vs. nonsense.

Laconia has many more important issues that should be dealt with. Why not just celebrate Flag Day on June 14 like the Americans we are?

The flag so many died for honoring and protecting our freedoms, the one so many have served and continue to serve under to protect our freedoms, the one that gives us the freedoms we have, the flag that is the flag of these United States of America.

Thank you to those who serve, have served, or gave all to protect “Old Glory” and what it stands for.
