To The Daily Sun,
It is encouraging that the New Hampshire Legislature will move forward in a bipartisan effort to advance public safety on the complex issue of firearm access and mental health. Rep. Terry Roy, R-Deerfield, and Rep. David Meuse, D-Portsmouth, have pledged to draft a bill that restricts firearm purchases for those involuntarily committed to psychiatric care, and then provides a pathway to restore their rights once they get the care they need. This commonsense move toward prevention of gun violence will help the many families across NH that are worried about loved ones who are a danger to themselves or others and have access to lethal firearms. The representatives highlight the need to be sensitive to reducing stigma around mental illness, while protecting the general welfare. It is exciting to see New Hampshire join the more than 40 states with this type of legislation in place. Working together we can achieve great things.
