To The Daily Sun,
My name is Julia Nye and I am writing to introduce myself to the city, and Ward 5 in particular, as the newly appointed Ward 5 city councilor. Thanks to the rest of the city councilors for their unanimous vote in support of my appointment as a qualified applicant.
I look forward to getting to know the residents of Ward 5 and learning about their concerns. My contact phone and email will be posted on the city’s website soon. I see my role as being a conduit between the residents and the city hall, by which I mean that I think it is important for me to convey the residents’ questions and for me to communicate what city hall is trying to accomplish. I see myself as an effective communicator as I have worked as a trial attorney for the New Hampshire Public Defender’s Office most of my 35 plus career. I retired two years ago, and I am looking forward to applying my skills to a new venue.
When I decided to apply for the opening in Ward 5, I reached out to all of the councilors, the mayor, and the city manager to learn what the position of city councilor entailed. Everyone responded except the mayor. I am disappointed that he felt the need to inappropriately comment on my qualifications immediately after the meeting on Facebook and encouraged distasteful comments to his post. I expect a mayor to be more dignified than that. I hope the nature of our working relationship will be more positive and productive in the future.
