MOULTONBOROUGH — After being on leave since April for unknown reasons, Police Chief Peter Beede Jr. has retired, effective July 31, according to Town Administrator Angela Bovill.
“The Town of Moultonborough Board of Selectmen and Chief Peter W. Beede Jr. wish to announce that Chief Beede has retired as the Town’s Police Chief effective July 31, 2026,” reads a press release, dated Thursday. “The Board would like to thank Chief Beede for his more than 30 years of service to the Town and wish him well in his future endeavors.”
The circumstances surrounding Beede’s leave are unknown. Requests for more information were made to Bovill and the selectboard, but yielded no results.
Reached back in April, selectboard member Karel A. Crawford declined to comment on whether or not the chief’s leave was paid or unpaid, or disciplinary in nature.
Now, the selectboard will decide a succession plan for the police department.
“The Board of Selectmen will determine the next steps for the Police Department moving forward,” Bovill said. No further information was provided.
In the interim, Lt. Mark Cavic has been leading the department.
Beede was with the Moultonborough Police Department for almost 35 years. He was installed as chief of police in 2022, leading a 14-member team. He previous served as a part-time deputy for the Carroll County Sheriff's Office.
