Guinevere Freeman: People have never been less involved in raising their children

The difference in the way some children are raised compared to others is palpable. Some simply know more, some are more clearly practiced in the art of conversation and discussion because their parents acted as they should, molding them into a person. When one has a child, they are not merely raising a child; they are raising a person, a full human. Why did they have the children if not to raise them?

By no means should one be dissuaded from having children. It is a profound opportunity for unselfishness, but nearly no one thinks that way. A parent has the unique opportunity to create a human being from scratch, to mold them with their own hands, yet many parents don't try to do that. Brilliance is not the luck of the draw; it is cultivated through education that lets youth better speak the brilliant thoughts that all people have. But no. We disdain the monarchs of old who handed their children off to wet nurses. Now we gasp at a royal woman of the past for handing her child away to quickly put herself in labor for another, but now we still do the same, just for the labor of a different kind. But now it is not just an interpersonal rot of the upper echelons of society with decadent luxury that covers the fruits of their lives; it is the everyday woman who willingly hands her child to the wet nurse state to bear a labor of a less impactful and fulfilling vocation.

There has never been a period of time where the regular masses have been less involved in the rearing of their own children, in ensuring their safety, both spiritual, emotional, physical, and in ensuring their proper moral and academic education.
