To The Daily Sun,
Recent presidential actions — most glaringly under Donald Trump — have made one thing abundantly clear: the United States is open for business. But in the America of today, “open for business” simply means one can buy one's way into this market, provided they have the resources to play the game. Tariffs — those euphemistic import taxes — are just the price of admission.
If one wields enough clout, they can purchase their ticket to sell abroad. All it takes is the right connections, the right war, or the right refusal to stop. America is open for business, and nothing — not national security, not the lives of tens of thousands, not our freedom to make choices or earn a fair wage — will stand in the way of commerce.
Profit now outweighs principle. Where we once feared corporations taking over the country, we now witness something even more insidious: a full merger. Under this regime, everything is negotiable, everything is for sale. There’s nothing perfect about our union — there never has been, and perhaps there never will be until we understand that the well-being of my neighbor is integral to my own.
For now, the United States remains the Disunited Corporation of America. Readers should govern themselves accordingly.
