There have been multiple complaints about the selection process for the vacant Laconia City Council seat. Mayor Mike Bordes described the selected candidate, Julia Nye, as “the least qualified.” It’s not clear how he made this determination, as he did not respond to her request to meet with him.
Ms. Nye is an experienced trial attorney with extensive ties to Laconia. All four of the candidates had excellent qualifications. Reasonable people can differ in their judgement. The councilors who voted for her both reviewed her application and met with her personally. To describe their choice as indicative of “an old boys club” is demeaning, partisan motivated and inaccurate. Mayor Bordes, even if he disagrees with the choice, should prioritize the well-being of the city and the effective functioning of the city council.
It is important to note, that Councilor Mike Conant voted yes to Ms. Nye, after his choice was turned down. Laconia has many challenges ahead and we need to work together to solve them. Ms. Nye is a valuable addition to the council.
