To The Daily Sun,
I recently attended a sold-out lecture on historic Laconia buildings given at the Winnipesaukee Museum at Funspot, hosted by two local historians, one of whom was The Daily Sun's own Warren Huse. People in attendance cared about historic Laconia.
Let's not repeat what happened with the demolition of the Hathaway House on Union Avenue more than 10 years ago, replaced by a donut shop. It's time to speak up and save the heritage building that is the former Harris Family Furniture store at 460 Union Ave. (Laconia Daily Sun July 26), next to Irwin's Hyundai showroom.
It's been my observation that the Irwin family has previously demonstrated their love and appreciation for all things Laconia. The community needs to ask them not to demolish the Harris Family building dating back to 1900, probably replacing it with a parking lot. Rise up, Laconia. Let them hear our voices of protest.Â
Remember what Joni Mitchell sang in the "Big Yellow Taxi": "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot." This is not what Laconia wants.
