To The Daily Sun,
I’m running for Moultonborough school board to advocate for educational excellence. Moultonborough’s proficiencies in English and Math have remained flat since 2018 near 58% and 42% respectively. I’ll also advocate for fiscal responsibility. This year’s proposed school budget is $21.1M which is 35% higher than the $15.6M in 2018. What has that bought us?
I held a meeting at the Moultonborough Library on 2/28/26 to inform residents why I’m running. I spent 10 minutes explaining how better proficiencies could be achieved using the principals of Steven Covey’s book, “The 7 habits of highly effective people”. The first habit is to “be proactive” (i.e. take action). The second habit is to “begin with the end in mind”. My proposal was to set a goal of 80% proficiency in both English and Math over the next 3 years. When I asked the 10 attendees if it was possible, 3 argued it was not. To my surprise the biggest detractor was Patrick Hart, our current School Board Chair.
It became clear to me why proficiencies have remained flat. There’s no advocate on the school board. If there were, I would have expected Patrick to negotiate the goal down to maybe 70%, but his arguments focused on ignoring the proficiency data altogether.
Apparently, Patrick is not the optimist I am. I believe parents, teachers and students want the best education possible. I may be wrong but would like an opportunity to try. Reelecting Heidi or Lauren will only continue the mediocre proficiencies and escalating costs. We now have 6 years of data to prove that.
Please attend the Meet the Candidates night at the Moultonborough Function Hall (Lion’s club) this Friday, March 6, at 5:30 PM. Also, I would appreciate your vote on Tuesday, March 10. Let your friends know.
