Bruce Jenket: Letter writers should reference facts, not misinformation

Two letters on Jan. 15 warrant response.

First was Susan Smith’s “Did editors get the memo on new letter to the editor policy?” (tinyurl.com/4c6f6wks). Smith claims The Laconia Daily Sun allows contributors to spread misinformation. The irony is she is one of those contributors. She previously submitted “Wrong to blame teachers union when schools underfunded” (tinyurl.com/4w57xd72). The latter letter to the editor prompted my two letters on the poor proficiencies in English and math and the high cost of education in NH. I invited debate but received none. The second contributor was Sandy McLaughlin’s “Readers should speak out more often and not be complicit” (tinyurl.com/4sb45mez). 

Well, I’ll oblige her. Her obvious support for attacks on ICE is baseless in my opinion. She has fallen victim to the left's false narrative that ICE is removing American citizens and legal immigrants. Where is her data to support that?

As opposed to listening to Mayor Jacob Frey, Gov. Tim Walz and CNN talking heads, maybe she should read and understand the laws on immigration. Immigrants are not U.S. citizens until they are nationalized and take the oath of allegiance. Here is a link to the nationalization process  (tinyurl.com/y5wrp89z). 

Those interfering with ICE operations are breaking the law. How is this any different than the Jan. 6 riot? In that case the FBI spent two years rounding up American citizens for trespassing and assaults on Capitol Police. Maybe the FBI should do the same for ICE agitators.

McLaughlin’s ability to ignore that ICE operations are legal under immigration laws passed by congress is disturbing. She is absolutely right that more people should speak up. I am, and invite her to debate the issue with facts not misinformation.
