Anne Glavin: Today’s ICE enforcement effort not professional, nor legal

I am a career law enforcement officer with 43 years of service, 29 of those as a police chief in Massachusetts and more recently in California. I retired at the end of 2018. I have never, in my entire career, seen anything like what we now see frequently with these round ups with ICE. Masked ICE agents with a hodgepodge of quasi military uniforms, gear, no professional demeanor and very questionable training.

Our federal government wants everyone to believe they are going after the worst criminal element of illegal immigrants. More frequently it appears to be men, women and children, at work, in school, in their cars and homes, etc. And add to that U.S. citizens (including off-duty police) who have a different color skin than white people.

Now we are seeing the killing of individuals like Renee Good, a young mother, in her car, parked the wrong way near a protest on a street. Instead of officers professionally telling her to move the car, she was shot in the head, arm and chest, plus a graze wound. Her crime? Parking the wrong way on a street.

And now the killing of Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse who was trying to help someone else. He was tackled by at least six officers and then shot to death. He, supposedly, was “brandishing” a firearm but he was actually filming with his cell phone. Both victims have been labeled domestic terrorists by government officials.

This is not professional, legal, law enforcement in America. We are now seeing police chiefs, like me, around the country condemn ICE, the killings and the corrupt investigations that go against normal procedures. ICE is out of control and we all must speak out, regardless of party affiliation.
