LHS band will be hollowed out by making it after-school program

It is the opinion of my inner circle that moving the high school music program to an "after school" time frame is just wrong and the school board should revisit this decision. It comes at a convenient time when the music teacher is retiring.

Keep in mind that this is an award-winning band — taking first place at Disney World this year. The entire music program is a class act which has been developed and groomed by Mrs. Debbi Gibson over many years.

Over the years I have attended the early, perhaps fifth- or sixth-grade concerts. They were painful to say the least. It is amazing how the bands improve through the years to even get the opportunity to compete in All New England or Disney World. It says a lot about the character and commitment from these kids.

When they wanted new uniforms they did fund-raisers. When they had an opportunity to go and compete at Disney World, they washed cars, baked cookies and did other funding. Of course, the community businesses contributed, but because it was for our youth and it was and still is an important program.

The Marching Sachems contribute to our Memorial Day and July 4 parades. Can you imagine just strolling up Main Street without our band to keep us in step?

Making this an after-school program will hollow out the band. Many kids must go to jobs, catch the bus, or take care of siblings. Their opportunity to stay in the music program will be drastically diminished.

One last thought is that any education cuts will have lasting effects on our children's future. Taxes will go up with or without these programs.

The future begins with the education of our youth. Do not diminish their educational opportunities.
