To the editor,

This is an open letter to Ward 1 Councilor Judy Krahulec.

When this whole process began regarding bike week vs. bike weekend I indicated to you that I realized we would be on opposite sides of this issue — I, for a weekend, you, for a week — and that was okay. Reasonable people can agree to disagree. However, your remarks as presented in the July 14 edition of the Laconia Daily Sun have left me and others, feeling bitterly betrayed and very disappointed.

While we never entertained the thought that we would be able to change your mind, we never thought that you would be an obstacle to a free and open democrcy in Laconia and your position regarding a referenda does exactly that. The logic of your argument that "it shouldn't be decidedby just those who go the polls" frankly, escapes me. I don't recall either you or other elected officals questioning their election based on the turnout. And Councilperson, if the voters shouldn't decide, then who should — outsiders who pay no taxes to our City Government? What right do they have to say anything regarding Laconias affairs? Exactly who Couincilperson Krahulec? Only the six Councilpersons and Mayor — who may know, but then again may not know what the majority of citizens want in this town? Why is a vote so terrifying to you and others?

At the end of the day, as one of your most ardent supporters, I urge you to reconsider the following:

a] your position regarding a referenda. How canyou deny our citizens their most basic right, the right to vote?

b} your continued participation in any bike event discussion and or votes. Your continued fiduciary interest in this event goes against any known principles of public service. Would we allow any councilperson to vote on any issue where they stand to make a buck? I think not. Your right to earn money from this event is not in question. Your decision not to recuse yourself is. If that concept of recusal is good enough for jurists and other elected officials, then it should be good enough for all in this city. The basic moral code of decency demands you do that.

Frankly, Councilperson Krahulec I found this letter very difficult to write. However, just as you are resolved in your beliefs, so am I regarding giving everyone the fair opportunity to vote. What is the alternative, when we neglect our citizens?
