KITTERY, Maine — One person was injured after a small fire began Aug. 13 outside the USS Hampton, a Los Angeles improved-class attack submarine docked at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for maintenance.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard information office.
Shipyard firefighters and area mutual aid were called to Dry Dock 1 after a fire alarm activation rang around 5 p.m. Wednesday, per the 225-year-old yard’s statement. All non-essential submarine personnel were temporarily evacuated from the vessel as the flames were put out.Â
The USS Hampton’s nuclear propulsion spaces were unaffected by the short blaze, according to the statement shared by shipyard spokesperson Jeremy Lambert.
