Bobbi Boudman narrowly defeated Dale Fincher in a special election for New Hampshire state representative in Carroll County Tuesday, according to results from the Secretary of State’s Office.
Boudman earned 2,207 votes — 51.9% — to Fincher’s 2,042.
Boudman, a Democrat, will now represent a historically conservative district — encompassing Wolfeboro, Ossipee, and Tuftonboro — that favored President Donald Trump in 2024 by 9 percentage points. Boudman previously lost to Glenn Cordelli — whose resignation in November sparked the special election — in 2024 by roughly 14%. In 2022, Boudman lost to Cordelli by roughly 13%.
Democrats are touting the win as a sign of changing momentum.
“We’re just eight months out from November, and Democrats are already flipping seats,” House Democratic Leader Alexis Simpson said in a statement Wednesday. “Bobbi’s win is just another reminder for New Hampshire House Republicans that no seat is safe.”
New Hampshire Democratic Chair Raymond Buckley called the victory “a clear referendum on Kelly Ayotte and New Hampshire Republicans’ disastrous agenda.”
Democrats nationally, still riding high after state legislative victories in other deep red districts in Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana, are bragging, too. In a statement, Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams called Tuesday’s result “the latest in a string of 28 Democratic state legislative flips since Trump’s election.”
“These wins aren’t a flash in a pan — together, they tell an undeniable story of Democratic momentum as voters reject Republicans and blame them for soaring costs,” Williams continued.
The result slightly shrinks the majority Republicans hold in the House to 214-178. There is also one independent representative. Republicans control a trifecta of the House, Senate, and governor’s office.
