The Police Department has begun a determined effort to detect and apprehend motorists driving while impaired by alcohol and drugs as well as aggressive and reckless drivers.

Throughout the holiday season, when the number of impaired drivers increases, the department will mount "saturation patrols." Traffic officers will patrol areas of the city where statistical data on collisions and arrests and other information on traffic patterns and drinking establishments indicates they are most likely to encounter impaired and reckless drivers.

At the same time, plainclothes officers will be conducting regular compliance checks and surveillance operations to identify underage drinkers. Funded by the New Hampshire Attorney General's Underage Drinking Laws Grant, this effort aims to curb access to alcohol by minors.

In Laconia, the number of DWI arrests has increased by 33 percent between 2003 and 2004 as police have stepped up their efforts to detect and apprehend offenders.
