LACONIA — A water main break over the weekend left a dozen customers without service for two days.

A water main, located at the intersection of Lexington Drive and Lynnewood Road near the industrial park, broke Saturday afternoon around 3:30 p.m., Laconia Water Department Superintendent Benjamin Crawford said Monday morning.

Crews were working to investigate and repair the break by 7:30 a.m. Monday. Service was expected to be restored to 13 homes Monday afternoon.

Water Department leaders were notified of the break by the Laconia Fire Department, who reported water coming up above ground over the weekend, and sent two of their employees to investigate it Saturday afternoon. They isolated the break, and returned Monday morning to excavate and work to determine its cause before making a repair.

No boil water notice was issued during the water main break.

The pipe in the area of the break will now be added to the Water Department's running list of pipes to be evaluated for future infrastructure repair and improvement.

Water main breaks happen more frequently during the winter, Crawford said, due to variables, including cold temperatures and frost in the ground. The age of a pipe and soil conditions can influence a break, too.

“A lot of factors that can make it or break it,” he said.
