The Board of Selectmen this week agreed to host the Timberman Triathlon for the next three years, through 2008. Keith Jordan, race director, requested the commitment to enable race promoters to enter a parallel three-year contract with Ironman, which would award the Timberman Triahlon 100 qualifying places for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship.
After six years the Timberman Triathlon was voted the Best Large Triathlon in the United States by USA Triathlon, the governing body of the sport. This year 2,600 athletes, representing all 50 states and five foreign countries, filled the sold-out field. The winners, Ironman Champion Chris Legh of Australia and Susan Williams, an Olympic Bronze Medalist, set course records. Jordan said that the event received media coverage from around the world and pumped more than $1.4 million into the local ecnomy.
Future events will be held on August 19-20, 2006, August 18-19, 2007 and August 23-24, 2008.
