GILFORD — A 17-year-old died on Friday as a result of an apparent drowning in the stretch of Lake Winnipesaukee known as The Broads.

The name of the deceased has not been released.

The victim, a male, had jumped overboard to retrieve a bag which had fallen overboard, according to a press release from the state’s Department of Safety. A 911 call was placed at 12:48 p.m. on June 20, after he failed to resurface.

Though sunny at the time, conditions were challenging for swimmers, with strong winds created rough water. The press release states the victim appeared to be struggling in the choppy water, then sank beneath the water’s surface.

Marine Patrol and members from Alton and Gilford’s fire departments engaged in an initial search, but couldn’t find the swimmer. NH Fish and Game later joined the effort with its dive team, and the body of the victim was located and recovered at 7:02 p.m.

Investigation into the teen’s death, including an autopsy, continues. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Sgt. Seth Alie of Marine Patrol at Seth.P.Alie@dos.nh.gov or 603-227-2117.
