The Senate Transportation and Interstate Cooperation Committee has scheduled a public hearing on House Bill 162, which would set speed limits on New Hampshire lakes, for Friday, February 24 in Representatives Hall beginning at 9 a.m.

The bill, sponsored by Representative jim Pilliod (R-Belmont), would set speed limits of 45 mph. in daytime and 25 mph. at night as well as require helmsmen to operate at "reasonable and prudent" speeds according to conditions on the water at all times. Violations would be added to the operator's driving record.

The hearing on the bill, which is among the most heavily lobbied and hotly contested of the legislative session, was originally planned for a smaller hearing room and a two hour time limit. The change of venue indicates that the Senate anticipates a large crowd and long hearing.

The House of Representatives passed HB 162 by a margin of 54 votes — 193 to 139 — on February 2. The bill is expected to face rougher seas and heavier weather in the Senate, where much of the leadership is opposed to it.
