ASCUTNEY, Vt. (AP) — Police on Monday arrested a man in a hit-and-run accident that killed a bicyclist on the Connecticut River bridge that links Ascutney with Claremont, N.H.
Police arrested Edward Streeter, 52, of Springfield, Vt., for striking a man on the Route 12 bridge Sunday.
Streeter has been charged as a fugitive from justice from New Hampshire. Warrants have been issued charging him with driving while intoxicated and negligent homicide.
Denman McKinney, 61, of Weathersfield, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the 8 p.m. collision, Fire Chief Darrin Spaulding said.
Police on both sides of the river immediately began searching for a blue Dodge Durango pickup truck that witnesses said left the scene after striking the cyclist. The witnesses said the truck was heading into Vermont when the crash occurred. The truck turned and returned over the bridge into New Hampshire, Spaulding said.
