ALTON — New Hampshire Marine Patrol is investigating a boating accident that took the life of a North Carolina man on Friday morning.

Investigators say Edmond Macri, 74, of Simsbury, Connecticut, was preparing to leave the dock with five adults and three children on board his 23-foot Cobalt inboard/outboard powerboat. Macri made an abrupt maneuver, causing a passenger, William Rowan, 35, of Wilmington, North Carolina, to fall into the water, where the vessel struck him.

Rowan was pronounced dead after he was pulled from the water.

Marine Patrol officers who were dispatched to the area of Little Mark Island a little after 10 a.m. found the boat tied to the dock when they arrived.

The investigation indicates that operator error was responsible for the death, but officials said that all aspects of the case remain under investigation.

Also responding to the call were the Alton police and fire departments, New Hampshire Fish and Game, and New Hampshire State Police.

Anyone who has further information or who witnessed the incident is encouraged to contact Sgt. Dave Ouellette at 603-227-2111 or by email at Dave.Ouellette@dos.nh.gov.
