GILMANTON — The Fire Department has been awarded an $18,469 grant from the Assistance to Firefighters of Homeland Security to purchase 12 sets of turnout gear for firefighters.

Chief Joe Hempel said the new turnout gear will replaced outdated gear that has a lifetime of 10 years and will save the taxpayers the money needed to replace it.

Hempel said the new coats and pants will provide firefighters with the best possible protection when responding to fires and other emergencies in Gilmanton.
