The Town of Belmont is accepting donations of non-perishable food items and paper goods for residents in need.

“We are having a food drive at Town Hall. We do have a box,” said Alicia Jipson, town administrator, during a recent selectboard meeting.

The donations will be brought to St. Joseph Parish Food Pantry, which saw an increase in need this month. At the Nov. 5 selectboard meeting, Board Chair Ruth Mooney said, “I know that the St. Joseph's Food Pantry, the last two to three weeks, has increased immensely.”

When news of delayed SNAP benefits hit social media, Taste of Legacy Cafe & Catering rose to the occasion, filling their grab-n-go cooler with free snack items and to-go lunches. Families in need are encouraged to come by.

“For the month of November we will keep this cooler stocked full of kids grab and go lunch and snack items that are free for anyone in need to take. For anyone looking to purchase items from the case please note that these items will NOT be for sale as their intent is to provide some support for families who are hurting/affected negatively by the current SNAP situation. Please spread the word and don’t be shy, no questions asked. Also a reminder that our Pay it Forward board is always here and available for anyone in need,” reads a Facebook post.

For anyone in need of something to eat, there are no questions asked, and everyone is welcome. Founder and operator Kat Sorrell has seen a tremendous uptick in the number of people struggling to put food on the table.

In an average month, the food pantry supports 300 to 400 families. This month, though, she’s forecasted to feed about 900.

“In those couple weeks, we saw easily 20-30 families per day, and we were going through $1,000 worth of food in 2-3 days,” wrote Sorrell in an email to The Laconia Daily Sun. “Thankfully we have an amazing community and businesses that help us and keep us going.”
