LACONIA — Family Dollar's downtown location is scheduled to close its doors soon, according to people familiar with the matter. The store may close as soon as December.

In 2019, the dollar store chain announced it would close 390 stores across the United States, although an official list of which branches was not provided.

According to an article from Patch, there are 28 Family Dollar stores in New Hampshire, three of which are located in the Lakes Region — Franklin, Meredith and Laconia. According to an employee, the Laconia store was not making enough revenue. Instead, the store will close and employees will be offered positions to help prop up the Meredith location.

Family Dollar was purchased by rival Dollar Tree in 2015. In 2019, 200 stores were scheduled for rebranding, and 1,000 were set to sell adult beverages after undergoing renovations.

A district manager for Family Dollar confirmed that the Laconia branch was closing, but referred The Sun to the corporate office for further details. Attempts to reach a corporate representative were unsuccessful.

Fellow tenants of the building on 546 Main St. said they also heard Family Dollar was closing. The building’s owner, Hsiu Chang, could not be reached for comment.
