A story that appeared in our Nov. 12 edition "Alton's 2005 property tax rate rate comes in at $10.16" contained an error that needs to be corrected. The property tax rate for 2005 for that township is $10.27 per $1,000 worth of value, which represents a decrease of $6.72 from last year’s $16.99.

All four portions of the property tax rate went down: The largest part, the local school tax rate, dropped more than 50 percent, from $6.64 to $3.38. The town government portion dropped $1.60, from $4.36 to $2.76. The state education tax fell from $3.88 in 2004 to $2.42 this year. The lowest portion, which is the cost of county government, was cut nearly in half, from $2.11 to $1.21. Since a revaluation of all town property was recently completed, the impact on individual taxpayers is likely to vary, according town officials. We regret our error. — The editor
