2-car collision Thursday morning sends 1 driver to hospital

GILFORD — One driver was sent to the hospital with serious injuries following a two-car accident at the intersection of Weirs and Lakeshore roads Thursday morning.

Gilford Police responded to a two vehicle accident at 7:37 a.m. on Aug. 20, with a report of injuries, according to Lt. Curtis Mailloux, who was at the scene of the accident. Mailloux said, upon arrival, there was a state trooper administering CPR to a 79-year-old male who was driving a white Lexus SUV.

The Lexus was traveling west on Lakeshore, and a black Subaru, driven by a 16-year-old male, was driving east, and preparing to turn left on Weirs Road at a yellow light in front of Sawyer’s Dairy Bar.

“As he was turning left is when he collided with the white SUV,” Mailloux said. “The operator of the white SUV suffered serious injuries.”

Police talked to the driver of the Subaru, and hope to speak with the other driver to find out more information, including about whether the lights were red or green.

The driver of the Subaru was not hurt. The injured driver was taken by ambulance to Concord Hospital-Laconia. Mailloux said Friday afternoon he did not know that driver's condition. He also said the driver of the Lexus was not wearing a seatbelt.

After the accident, the intersection was closed in all directions while investigators evaluated the scene. The Gilford Police drone was flown, followed by a drone from the Belknap Regional Accident Investigation Team, at about 9:30 a.m.

Both vehicles remained in the intersection, surrounded by cones, and investigating officers and Gilford firefighters evaluating the scene. The vehicles were heavily damaged on their front ends, notably the Subaru, which had a crumpled hood, and pieces scattered around the car. The driver’s side door of the Subaru was open, showing a side airbag deployed.

The Lexus had a broken driver’s side window, and damaged near the wheel on the driver’s side. The front bumper was mostly torn off, hanging by the driver’s side.

Gilford Police said the intersection was reopened at 11 a.m.

Mailloux said the cause of the accident is under investigation.
