Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has confirmed that there is still evidence being withheld from the public in order to “protect” the investigation into Nancy Guthrie‘s disappearance.
Nanos spoke to local news outlet KOLD on Tuesday (May 12), where he was asked whether his department was withholding evidence. “Yes, absolutely there are,” he said. “But it’s not done because we got to keep it secret… It’s done because we got to protect our case.”
Nancy, the 84-year-old mother of Today’s Savannah Guthrie, has been missing since February 1, when police believe she was abducted from her home in Tucson, Arizona. While investigators have released doorbell camera footage of a masked suspect and a description of that individual, no suspects have been named.
Nanos said local investigators and the FBI are “working hard to get this resolved,” adding, “I think every day they get closer.”
“Day one, the FBI was involved in this case, and they continue to be involved in this case. Every single day,” the sheriff asserted, following reports of tensions between the Pima County Sheriff Department and the intelligence service.
As for why the case is stretching on so long, now over 100 days and counting, Nanos said it’s because DNA testing “moves at a snail pace.”
“We continue to work with our labs, whether it’s on the digital end or the biological end, DNA,” he explained. “But for my investigative team, and for me, we look at this as, no, this is doing exactly what we need it to do.”
Nanos, who earlier this week told a reporter his department is closer to solving the case, stated, “I believe, at some point in time, we will make an arrest on this case. And whoever that individual is, that individual will have a right to a fair and impartial trial.”
On Tuesday, CBS News reported that a strand of DNA recovered from Nancy’s home was still being evaluated by scientists at the FBI laboratory in Quantico, Virginia. The DNA was first sent by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department to a private laboratory in Florida before it was shipped to the FBI’s crime lab.
Nanos argued against the idea that the case had gone ‘cold,’ noting, “There’s way too much work to be done, that is ongoing, with some of the physical evidence we have. And we’re not going to give up on it just because it’s been 100 days.”
