Netflix would seem sort of empty without a raunchy adult animated comedy from the twisted mind of Nick Kroll. His coming-of-age animated sitcom Big Mouth aired for eight seasons and 81 episodes from 2017 to 2025, making it one of Netflix’s longest-running original shows. Its spinoff, Human Resources, was on for two seasons and ran for 20 episodes.
So, after tackling the dynamics of puberty-brained pre-teens and their inner monsters, Kroll is now casting an eye towards animal behavior with Mating Season.
Here is everything you need to know about the randy toon, including what it’s about, when it premieres, and who will voice the crazy critters who inhabit its animated cels.
When does Mating Season premiere?
All 10 episodes will be available on May 22 on Netflix.
What is Mating Season about?
Just like Big Mouth was about the lustful antics of adolescents and Human Resources was about the lustful antics of the adolescents’ inner monsters, Mating Season is about the lustful antics of the animal world. It’s an adult animated romantic comedy that examines love, relationships, mating rituals, the hardships of finding a partner before winter, and the dire need to perpetuate a species. The toon stars bears, raccoons, deer, and a whole bunch of furry, fluffy, and frisky woodland creatures just waiting to possibly slightly offend and entertain audiences.
“Big Mouth broke new ground in the world of adult animation with heart, humor, and total chaos — they took the awkwardness of adolescence and turned it into something universal and deeply human,” said John Derderian, Vice President, Animation Series, Netflix. “Working with Nick Kroll and the brilliant minds at Brutus Pink over the course of eight seasons has been legendary. Now, with Mating Season, they’ll bring that same bold and hilarious creativity into the animal kingdom. We’re beyond excited to unleash this next chapter together.”
Who’s in the cast of Mating Season?
The cast includes Nick Kroll as a raccoon named Ray, June Diane Raphael as a deer named Fawn, Zach Woods as a bear named Josh, and Sabrina Jalees as a fox named Penelope.
The list of guest stars for Mating Season includes Sarah Silverman, Abbi Jacobson, Vanessa Bayer, Aidy Bryant, Jason Alexander, Lena Waithe, Jason Mantzoukas, Carlos Alazraqui, David Duchovny, Beck Bennett, Pam Adlon, Timothy Olyphant, Maria Bamford, Mark Duplass, Ana Gasteyer, Jack McBrayer, Natasha Legerro, Matt Rogers, Lauren Lapkus, Meredith Hagner, Lisa Gilroy, Natalie Morales, Clancy Brown, Drew Tarver, Annaleigh Ashford, Nasim Pedrad, and Andrew Rannells.
Who is behind Mating Season?
The show is created by Mark Levin, Jennifer Flackett, Andrew Goldberg, and Nick Kroll — and executive produced by them for their company, Brutus Pink — with Chris Prynoski, Shannon Prynoski, Antonio Canobbio, and Ben Kalina serving as executive producers for Titmouse.
